I use VMWare Workstation Player primary to run Linux but a few days ago I wanted to install a virtual copy of Windows 10 to test some upcoming features. One of the important features that these tools add is the ability to copy data from the virtual machine to the host operating system or vice-versa. I knew that I had chosen the option to download VMWare tools when creating the virtual machine. I even remember the message log displaying the notification that the tools had been downloaded.

None of this worked. This is when I searched the VMWare forums and found the solution on this thread. Repeat the above step to remove the Floppy Drive. Optional, but this is what fixed it for me. Courtesy: AskUbuntu forums. Previously, it had the Windows ISO selected. The option should no longer be greyed out.

Click on it to install the VMWare Tools. You will also see a new tab at the bottom of the screen prompting you to install the tools. Thank you for being a Ghacks reader. Vote count: 0.

I recently upgraded VMware Fusion to version I created two different VMs from iso. First CentOS 7. I used the “easy install” method from download. But it both cases, VMware Tools was not installed automatically as is described in the user manuals. And I have tried numerous methods to add them later, based on Stack OverFlow discussions, community discussions, blog posts, etc.

Nothing has worked so far. On the Ubuntu system, when the machine is powered down, I can see the menu choice “Install VMware Tools”, but it is disabled, greyed out. A few minutes ago, I upgraded my VMware Fusion to version For the Ubuntu But I’m really interested in Sharing Files with my host. And even after installing open-vm-tools, and rebooting, I still get the message, “Shared folders will not be available in the virtual machine until VMware Tools is installed and running.

We use open-tools-tools for Linux. As you mentioned open-vm-tools installed on Ubuntu I’ve not tested on CentOS, but on my Ubuntu VMs with open-vm-tools installed I must disable and re-enable shared folders after booting it for them to mount.

Okay so on mac I was trying to create a win 7 vm machine using vmware fusion on MacOS obviously.
